    Kenyu Chinen - Shorin Ryu

    Shorin-Ryu by Master Kenyu Chinen.

Shorin School is one of Okinawa's three main streams of Karate (Goju School, Uechi School, Shorin School ...). In 1933, Master Choshin Chibana named Shorin School. In 1948, they organized Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate-do Association. They took over the Shuri-te stream. There is a Dojo not only in Okinawa but also overseas.

Kenyu Chinen was born in 1944 on Ie, a island near Okinawa. He started his Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo training in 1959 with Master Shuguro Nakazato. In 1962, he started training in Kobudo under Master Shimpo Matayoshi. In 1976, Master Kenyu Chinen left Okinawa for Europe, where he set out to promote and teach Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo. He quickly opened his first dojo in Paris (France). Sharing his life between France and Okinawa, Master Chinen has ever since continued his study of Kobudo under the guidance of Master Matayoshi until his death, and is still a student of Master Katsuya Miyahira in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate.

In 1986, Master Chinen published "Kobudo d'Okinawa", which became a world best-seller. In 1993, he founded and became President and Chief Instructor of the World Oshu-Kai Dento Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate Do Kobudo Federation, an organization dedicated to the worldwide promotion of Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate and Okinawa Kobudo, as well as other aspects of the Okinawan traditional culture.

In 2004, he opened the W.O.F. Honbu Dojo in Yomitan, Okinawa. That same year, he also created the Okinawa Traditional Karatedo Kobudo International Studying Center, in collaboration with Master Meitatsu Yagi and Master Yasuo Shimoji. The Center's purpose is the worldwide promotion of Okinawan traditional martial arts: Shorin-Ryu, Goju-Ryu, Uechi-Ryu and Kobudo. Master Kenyu Chinen now teaches Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. He has educated more than a thousand black belts in traditional Shorin-Ryu Karate and Kobudo. He currently owns a 9th Dan in Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Karate and an 8th Dan in Okinawa Kobudo.
